Scottsdale, in Arizona’s Valley of the Sun, has grown from a tiny farming cluster of 2,000 people occupying one square mile in 1951, to a vibrant community of more than 219,000 persons spread over an area of 184 square miles. Founded by Army Chaplain Winfield Scott in 1888, Scottsdale, long known as the “West’s Most Western Town,” has matured into one of the premier examples of a sophisticated, new west-urbane, and cultured community. Scottsdale residents enjoy a quality of life that attracts visitors from around the world. The city is home to 125 golf courses, 220 tennis courts, dozens of parks and hundreds of miles of bike paths and hiking trails. Many of those amenities are along the Indian Bend Wash Greenbelt, a lush system of lakes and open space. The greenbelt runs from Scottsdale’s southern boundary, through the heart of the city and transitions into a trails system serving the Scottsdale McDowell Sonoran Preserve. The preserve encompasses some of the most scenic desert lands and mountains in Arizona and includes hundreds of miles of trails. Ultimately the preserve is planned to span about 34,000 acres – about one-third the city’s landmass.
