Turn Up the Heat

Whether you are settling into a new place or have been in your home since the dawn of time, as the weather gets cooler, it’s time to turn off the AC and fire up the furnace. Last month we talked about smoke detectors – this month, let’s talk about furnace maintenance. Oh, the joys of homeownership!

If It Ain’t Broke

This Old House  features an article that basically states the obvious – don’t wait until your furnace is broken to have a professional look at it. I think we understand this in theory but, most of us lean toward the “If it ain’t broke” rule of budgeting.

May I propose a different way of thinking about this? Freezing pipes are no fun. They are also not cheap. Before you light your pilot light, make sure everything is working so that expensive surprises don’t jump out and grab you when you least expect it.

There’s Your Trouble

About.com  has a helpful article on troubleshooting a gas furnace. If your gas furnace is not producing enough heat, there might be a few explanations: dirty air filters, dirty burners, or obstructed air flow. You can try replacing your air filters. Beyond that, I definitely recommend calling a professional.

Wishing you joy in your home!
